Why Daily Showers After 65 May Do More Harm Than Good

As skin ages, it generally produces less oil and becomes more vulnerable to dryness. Long, hot showers and harsh cleansers can worsen that discomfort, leaving skin itchy, irritated, or cracked. Still, turning 65 does not automatically make daily bathing harmful. Some older adults do well with two or three showers weekly; others need more frequent washing because of sweating, incontinence, activity, or medical needs. The right routine depends on the person, not a birthday.

Comfort starts with gentler care: keep showers brief, use lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then moisturize while skin is slightly damp. Between showers, wash hands regularly and clean areas such as the underarms and groin as needed. Grab bars, nonslip surfaces, and a suitable shower seat can make bathing safer. Persistent itching, cracks, or signs of infection deserve medical attention. The goal is not less cleanliness, but a routine that protects comfort and dignity.
